FIRST SPAN OF SAN FRANCISCO-OAKLAND BAY BRIDGE IN CONSTRUCTION - Workmen in this picture are erecting the first trusses in the first span to be placed in construction on the world's largest bridge between San Francisco and Oakland. This span - the upper chord marking the height of the upper deck, and the lower chord, the height of the lower deck - will be 288 feet long. There are fourteen 288-foot spans, five 510-foot spans, one 1400-foot cantilever span, and two 2310-foot suspension spans on this 4-1/2 mile bridge."
