On back: "Sacramento today is observing 'Judah Day,' honoring Theodore D. Judah, young civil engineer who conceived the western portion of the first transcontinental railroad (now Southern Pacific). Judah made the surveys, interested the 'Big Four' -- Stanford, Huntington, Hopkins and Crocker -- of Central Pacific, and was instrumental in obtaining congressional approval of the project, but he didn't live to see the gold spike driven at Promontory, Utah, 80 years ago today. 5/20/49". |
