| Notes |
On back: "ACME NEWSPICTURES, SAN FRANCISCO BUREAU, SF 13915. ALL'S QUIET ON ALCATRAZ FOLLOWING ESCAPE - A few guards walked the catwalks, a few seagulls whirled disconsolately overhead - these were the only signs of life on Alcatraz Island, 'Devil's Island' in San Bay, following the daring escape of two Oklahoma criminals under cover of a dense fog. According to Alcatraz officials latest story, the convicts broke out of the machine shop and made their way to the water from the north side of the island shown here, with the machine shop directly in view. They did not explain how the men got through the six rows of barbed wire entanglements seen above the waterline. (LA SEATTLE NY CHI CL) 12-17-37". |
