Notes Newscopy: "'SPREADER' EXAMINED--Warden James A. Johnston of Alcatraz Prison (left) and James V. Bennett, director of the Federal Bureau of Prisons, examine the implement used by Paul Bernard Coy to pry bars apart. The tool, made by Coy, consisted mostly of pipe couplings. Coy also used pliers, with which he struck a guard in his futile bid for freedom.".
