Notes Printed on back: "The northern waterfront was still growing in 1863.... In this picture taken from Telegraph Hill, the wharves from left to right are: Vallejo Street, Broadway, and Pacific. The roadway on piling in the left foreground is Front Street with cordwood piled high on it, and Whitehall boats moored alongside it as well as hanging from davits. A dredge is at work between Vallejo Street and Broadway Wharves. Two ships and two schooners lie at the former wharf, and two steamboats, the nearer being the river steamer Chrysopolis, are moored at the latter. At the inner end of the slip between the wharves, a ferry, possibly Contra Costa, can be seen peering from behind buildings. Another ship is at Pacific Wharf, while ships, schooners, and a coastwise steamer are at anchor in the bay. (Courtesy California Historical Society.)".
