Description Recruits and trains volunteers to be ombudsmen who visit long-term care facilities (skilled nursing facilities or residential facilities) and adult day health care centers on a regular basis. Visiting volunteer advocates receive, investigate and attempt to resolve complaints lodged on behalf of frail residents. They also work with residents, family members and facility staff to resolve problems concerning patient rights, quality of care, physical environment, abuse and other related issues. This program advocates for better care for all senior citizens. Also provides training to nursing home personnel and develops resident councils. Serves as a witness for residents signing their Advance Health Care Directives.
Eligibility Elderly resident of long-term care facilities and their families.
Fee Free.
Application To volunteer apply by phone. Volunteers must go through an orientation and 36 hours of training.
