Description Offers supportive, educational, and rehabilitative services for blind or visually impaired individuals of all ages. Provides transcription services, mutual support groups, taxi vouchers, and information and referral. Rehabilitation services include training in financial management, cooking, and other independent living skills. Orientation and mobility services provide training in using a cane, orientation in the home or office, travel skills throughout the community, resume assistance and an accessible job search computer station. Volunteers assist blind and visually impaired individuals in their homes with reading mail; writing correspondence; shopping; running errands; and going hiking, jogging and tandem bike riding. Offers customized services for deaf-blindness and AIDS-related vision loss.
Classes for adults include: Braille, computer training including an open lab, sculpture and yoga. Activities for children include after-school and weekend programs; recreational activities; cooking instruction; museum visits; and participation in local educational and cultural events. Activities and services for teenagers include computer training; dances; job readiness seminars; and tandem bike riding. Sponsors Enchanted Hills Camp (EHC), a residential summer camp located in Napa Valley. Operates a news and information reading service over the second audio program (SAP) channel of KTVU, Fox Channel 2 in Oakland. The Adaptations Lighthouse Store sells adaptive aids and appliances. The Tech Center provides equipment evaluations for computer-based adaptive technology products.
Provides meeting rooms for nonprofit agencies which assist blind and visually handicapped individuals. Publishes a free monthly newsletter, "Lantern," available in large print, Braille, audiocassette, and compact disc.
Eligibility Individuals who are blind, visually impaired or print handicapped. For taxi vouchers, must be a San Francisco resident.

Application Call to arrange an appointment with a social worker. Volunteers are required to take a training course on assisting individuals with visual impairments.
Transportation Muni (5 Fulton, 19 Polk, 21 Hayes, 47 Van Ness or 49 Van Ness Mission) and Muni Metro (Van Ness station). A group van is available for paratransit users.
