Description Provides immediate food, clothing, medical and shelter assistance to victims of disasters including floods, fires and earthquakes. Arranges for other disaster relief services, if needed. After an initial moratorium, provides information, when available, on the condition and safety of people in the affected area following a disaster. Conducts emergency preparedness trainings for business and industry which includes CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation) and First Aid. Provides earthquake community education and preparedness courses. Provides training to volunteers to become disaster relief workers. Maintains a resource library for disaster planners. Provides emergency preparedness trainings for communities.
Provides counseling and crisis intervention for military personnel and their families. Provides 24-hour information through a world-wide communications systems to verify and report emergency situations affecting military personnel, civilians, and their families and works to re-establish contact. Provides financial assistance to military families and veterans for help with basic needs. Offers international tracing regarding location, health and welfare of civilian foreign nationalists living abroad and assists with family reunification. Works with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to process requests for travel documents for the resettlement of displaced individuals or refugees. International services also include health and welfare reports, referrals, and ICRC Certificates of Captivity document requests for former civilian detainees and prisoners of war.
Provides health and first aid stations during community events. Offers AIDS education to teenagers and adults in English and Spanish. Offers classes in safe babysitting, first aid, CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation), swimming and lifesaving. Teaches health, safety and disaster awareness in schools. Sponsors Youth for Chinatown Elderly which matches young, recent Chinese immigrants with an older Chinatown resident in a friendly visiting program. Offers a youth leadership-development program.
