Description Designs and builds gardens, yards, and play areas throughout San Francisco, helping communities reclaim land. Provides employment and on-the-job training in construction and landscaping for both men and women, including ex-offenders and people in recovery. Offers programs for youth with court mandated community service assignments; and, through its Youth and Economic Development Department, provides opportunities for teens to participate in gardening and landscaping programs (such as the Youth Garden Internship (YGI) and Green Team).
Supports and publicizes San Francisco's network of community gardens. Teaches city dwellers to garden, compost and enjoy a closer relationship with nature. Maintains a demonstration garden, Garden for the Environment, (located at Seventh Avenue and Lawton Street) which features displays specially designed for Bay Area urban gardeners. Provides soil testing and information on the danger of lead in soils. Sponsors the Saint Mary's Urban Youth Farm (located on Alemany Boulevard and Ellsworth Street) which has a composting site that produces mulch and compost for community gardens and for sale to the general public. SLUG offers volunteer opportunities. This organization maintains a speakers bureau. Publishes two newsletters, "SLUG Update," and "Trowel" both biannually.
Eligibility 18 years of age or older for on-the-job training; 14 to 17 years of age for youth programs; must provide own transportation to job sites.
Fee Annual memberships begin at $20 for students or seniors and up. Dues include discounts at Bay Area gardening stores, SLUG programs and services, free seeds, supplies, and publications.
