Description Serves as the major circulating collection for the San Francisco Public Library system. Provides access to a broad range of print and nonprint material, reference assistance, programs for individuals with disabilities, special collection centers, and community-endowed centers. Offers online access to informational databases, the Internet, and various electronic resources.
Collections and services located at the Main Library are: Art & Music (including sports and recreation); Book Arts & Special Collections; Business & Technology (including consumer information, food, and the sciences); Fisher Children's Center; General Collections; Magazines & Newspapers (including telephone books and city directories); the International Center; Jobs and Careers Center; Government Information Center; Patent and Trademark Depository Library; San Francisco History Center (including the San Francisco Historical Photograph Collection); and the Teen Center (for youth 13 to 18 years of age).
Community-endowed centers include the African American Center, Filipino American Center, Chinese Center, James C. Hormel Gay and Lesbian Center, and the Wallace Stegner Environmental Center.
Access Services programs serve people with disabilities and special needs through the Deaf Services Center (for people who are Deaf or hard of hearing, their families, friends, and professionals); Friends for Life (for San Franciscans who are homebound); Library for the Blind and Print Disabled (for people who have no vision, low vision, or difficulty holding or reading books); Library on Wheels (bookmobile outreach to San Francisco's seniors); Project Read (tutoring to improve reading and writing skills of English-speaking adults); and the Resource Collection for Learning Differences (for people with learning differences, their families, friends, and professionals).
Information Services answers reference questions in person and by telephone (415-557-4400) and conducts public orientation and training in the use of the Internet, SFPL online catalog, and other databases available on the Library's Web site (www.sfpl.org).
Dial-A Story offers recorded children's stories over the telephone in English (415-437-4880), Cantonese (415-437-4883), and Spanish (415-437-4882).
Meeting rooms (15-150 capacity) and an auditorium (240 capacity) are available for public use; call 415-557-4590 for information. Volunteer opportunities are also available; call 415-557-4280.
Eligibility Open to the public. Borrower cards: San Francisco resident or any California resident with a valid library card from another California public library. Identification and proof of address are required (minor must have parent's or guardian's signature).
Fee Free services. There are charges for late, lost or damaged items.
Transportation Muni (5 Fulton, 19 Polk or Market Street lines) and BART/Muni Metro (Civic Center station).
