| Description |
Responsible for enforcing environmental health codes and ordinances in San Francisco. Regulates and permits sanitation landfills and vehicles; oversees removal of asbestos located within buildings and facilities owned by the City and County of San Francisco; responds to potable water supply concerns; issues permits for swimming pools, spas, and water wells; and issues public warnings regarding unhealthy water conditions, including potable water, ocean swimming and fishing, and consumption of shellfish caught within the waters around San Francisco. |

Inspects and issues permits and licenses to all retail food facilities in San Francisco including restaurants, grocery markets, street fairs, vending machines, catering trucks, special events, and manufacturers. Investigates allegations and complaints of food poisoning and general unsanitary conditions regarding restaurants and all other food permitted facilities. |

Licenses and regulates massage practitioners and businesses. Oversees and coordinates the West Nile Virus Prevention and Mosquito Control Program (877-WNV-BIRD or 877-968-2473). Permits businesses for the sale of tobacco. |

Responds to and investigates public complaints regarding general public health nuisances and unsanitary conditions including uncollected garbage and refuse, rodents and other pests, unpleasant and offensive odors, abandoned buildings, vacant lots, and abandoned vehicles (on private property only). Collects hazardous waste which has been illegally disposed of on public streets and in public areas. |

Sponsors the Toxic Information Center (415-206-5477) which provides information on public hazards, including asbestos and chemical odors. Inspects all health related complaints for hotels, motels, boarding houses, single-room occupancy (SRO) facilities, and hotels designated to serve people who are homeless. Responds to public complaints regarding environmental health problems. Provides speakers on topics concerning environmental health. Conducts research on and provides evaluation of priority San Francisco environmental health issues. |
