| Description |
Oversees San Francisco's environmental policies and practices including recycling and household hazardous waste collection and reduction. Develops plans, proposes legislation and regulations, and consults with City Departments regarding environmental issues. Works to reduce automotive emissions through programs that promote trip reduction, transit incentives, and environment-friendly vehicles. Promotes the use of alternative transportation including public transit, ridesharing, bicycling and walking. Promotes and supports programs to reduce, reuse, and recycle discarded materials in San Francisco in businesses, residences, and educational facilities. Regulates the City's Integrated Pest Management Program. The Program is a plan to reduce the amount of toxic pesticides used by City departments. |

The EcoCenter, located at the Department's office, offers information on remodeling existing older structures using environmentally sensitive methods. The Environmental Justice Grant Program funds organizations that provide improvement services in the low-income neighborhoods, and advises City Departments on environmental justice issues. Publishes the "Guide to San Francisco Environmental Services", a directory of services related to energy conservation, hazardous materials, recycling and waste. The guide is free and is available at the Department's office or on the Web site. |

The Commission on the Environment establishes policy, sets rules and regulations, and approves budget for the Department of the Environment. Advises the Board of Supervisors, the Mayor and other City departments on citywide environmental issues. Meets bimonthly on odd numbered months (January, March, May, July, September and November) on the 4th Tuesday at 5 p.m. at City Hall, 1 Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett Place, Room 416. |
