Description The Sheriff, elected by the voters, is the executive officer of the department. Administers six adult county jails located in San Francisco (850 Bryant Street, 425 Seventh Street and San Francisco General Hospital) and in San Bruno (1 Moreland Drive). Provides security for the City and County courts and transports prisoners. The Civil Division is responsible for carrying out all judgments of the Civil Courts including collecting money owed to prevailing parties, attaching, maintaining custody, and selling of real and personal property, serving bench warrants, subpoenas, and other court papers, and performing evictions and garnishments.
Sponsors the Post Release Education Program (PREP) which provides supportive services to facilitate the transition into the community for current county jail inmates who are near their release date and for individuals recently released from county jail. Provides information about available social services (housing, employment, health, and education). Sponsors the Sheriff's Work Alternative Program (SWAP) which offers community work opportunities in lieu of jail time for eligible inmates. Sponsors Resolve to Stop the Violence Project (RSVP), a violence prevention program for violent offenders including domestic violence. Offers home detention programs for eligible inmates. The Eviction Assistance Program provides assistance to elderly, disabled, and indigent evictees, call 415-554-7283.
